Environmental Justice

In early December the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCC) will assemble in Cancun, Mexico for the 16th Conference of the Parties (COP 16). From December 7-11 the Rt. Rev. Marc Andrus, Bishop of the Episopal Diocese of California, and The Rt. Rev. Naudal Gomes, Bishop of the Episcopal Anglican Diocese of Curitiba, Brazil, will convene a parallel global dialogue. "The companion bishops see this as an opportunity to raise the banner of 'climate justice' to the Church and to the world," according to the Rev. Griff Griffin, DioCal's Environmental Justice Missioner, who has been instrumental in organizing the meeting. "They want this diocesan companionship to point toward justice and reconciliation, amid the harsh global context of catastrophic climate change." The gathering which is to take place at the Bishop Kellogg Conference Center, Sao Pedro de Macoris, Dominican Republic, will draw the participation of bishops from Guatemala, Central Ecuador, Cuba and the DominicanRepublic, as well as lay and ordained representatives from The Episcopal Church and several other dioceses.
