First Day At Work

Today was my first day at work. I think the transition is generally easier if I just jump right in.
Goodness it was hot this morning. I managed a cup of Nescafe and fixed a bowl of oatmeal and was off to the office. Khakis and a white shirt. You could pick me out of the crowd because I was the rumpled one. Often thin and always broad shouldered, these folks wear clothes well. They are pressed and pulled together, and I could never measure up. I'm the casual guy from California. I see their poise and grace as they glide through space, heads up and shoulders back. Many of the women have practiced walking carrying baskets and water on their heads when they were young girls. Great posture and presence. Men and women generally have chiseled features, high cheekbones and radiant skin. They are very handsome, hospitable and polite. I was introduced to my co-workers and met with Henrique Tokpa, the President of the University. My office is adjacent to his, and it has high ceiling and nice cross light.
I thought everything went well the first day. When I returned home and was changing my clothes, there was the evidence of weary traveler syndrome. A large hang tag hung from under the right arm of the shirt and read "Levi's $50".
Busted! I wondered why everyone smiled so much.
