Learning the Portuguese language is one of the most difficult challenges that I've had. I do not have the gift of language. I am aware that as I learn to speak the language, I change. "Vermelho" is different than "red". It seems a bit more orange-red than the color I learned as a child. But it is also the color of a fire truck. Language is cultural and universal. I am committed to learning and speaking in the tongue of the land. I told my teacher that I feel a part of my brain being exercised and broken open to provide a space for the experience before me. I will learn in a new way.
My friend Jeffrey says, "Living the changed life--that's the hard stuff we're called to."
