Filled With The Holy Spirit
John "leapt for joy" with adoration in the presence of the Christ Child. And, so read the Lesson yesterday at St. John's Chapel and around the world. The tiny chapel was crowded with over twenty children and fourteen adults; led in worship by +Naudal, Odelon+, and Roberto+. It is a neighborhood of the marginalized, the unemployed, of broken families, violence, and drug wars. It is a community at risk. Every child and every adult there in anticipation and adoration. Each one a joyful presence. This was the last service before Christmas, and +Naudal spoke of St. Nicholas in his homily, explaining that unlike Papai Noel, Nicholas didn't bring presents. He spoke to the children and reminded us of the true meaning of Christmas. After the benediction and blessing, each child received a package from Papai Noel. They had been patient, but now they were filled with excitement. Their eyes were wide and hearts joyful as each was handed a small wrapped gift. Some would save it until Christmas morning, but most couldn't wait and tore away the paper. With each child, it seemed not important what was inside the wrapper. What mattered was that they received something; and they were remembered by Papai Noel. They felt a part of something larger than themselves, and they were included. It wasn't the present, but it was the Spirit of Christmas.
