Finados

Today is Dia dos Mortos, or Dian de Finados, commonly called Finados. Here is Brazil it is less
of a Festa as celebrated in Mexico and other Latin American countries. In urban areas, it is more becoming a holiday from work, and there are many in October and November, mostly days in the Roman Catholic calendar that are now secular. In towns and villages, people still gather at graves and light candles and decorate with tributes of flowers, remembering the dead.
At home, some improvise alters and decorate them with votives, photographs and icons. It is
exactly six months different in time from the first weekend in May, and Memorial Day in the United States. Similarly, families gather at grandparents houses, beach houses and vacation spots to celebrate their lives with family and friends, and pay tribute to those who have gone before.
