Jerusalem

From April of 2006 through March of 2007 I lived in Jerusalem and served as the Sacristan at St. George's Cathedral and Course Assistant at St. George's College. I took a twelve month sabbatical from my design business and I went into the world "to love and serve the Lord". And, only because of the support that I received from family, friends, colleagues, and clients.
There were many hurdles, which as my Quaker friends advised me, melted away. When I was offered the opportunity to go, I moved forward with the same determination with which I had met challenge in my life, but the difference was that I never really doubted that it was possible.
I was interrupting everything that was familiar and secure and promising, to wander into all that was unfamiliar and filled with uncertainty. A stream fisherman, I described the forward movement as a swift current 'round my feet. I thought I would serve "in the field" for the year, and then return to my former life as it had been.
