Saudade

I wrote about "saudade", a word that is not easily translated from Portuguese--which delights Brazilians. It is a kind of right of ownership. I continue to define it as I best understand it to be:
I am because of all that I love and long for. My friends seem to like the gringo's translation, maybe as much for the attempt to understand their most significant expression of the soul, as its accuracy. Brazilians have saudades when they live abroad and get homesick or when they are separated from family and friends. It is a state of mind that they seek and desire. A pining for something or someone. It is a combination of melancholy, love, gratitude and joy. Saudade. (Sa-ud-gee)
